Brendan Gee set his sights on a broadcast or telecommunications career early on. A 2015 graduate of Wissahickon High School, Brendan, a varsity lacrosse player, honor roll student and a member of the school’s TV Club, aspired then to begin a career in the industry.
After high school, Brendan attended Penn State University. He graduated in 2019 from Penn State’s College of Communications, where he majored in telecommunications.
A member of Jack and Jill of America Inc., Brendan was a standout among the class of 2015 scholarship candidates, which led to him receiving an Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation scholarship award. Growing up around the Horsham, Pennsylvania area and being a fellow lacrosse player lent a sense of familiarity to Edward Coombs and his legacy.“It definitely hit closer to home,” Brendan says of the Foundation’s namesake, a class of 2010 Hatboro-Horsham High School graduate and rising sophomore at Marist College at the time of his death in August 2011. “As a past scholarship earner, I definitely want to make sure I’m making everyone involved with the Foundation proud.”
How the scholarship opened doors
“Just being able to have that on my resume and say I was one of the fortunate ETC Foundation scholarships, I’m sure it’s helped me land multiple internships and jobs as well,” Brendan says.
The prestige of the scholarship award certainly did not hurt his ability to land several integral internships and jobs. Brendan interned for four summers at NBC10, a television news station serving the greater Philadelphia region. While there, he contributed dozens of articles for the news station’s website, researched facts for stories, confirmed events and other news items submitted, designed graphics for the web and participated in executive content meetings. While at Penn State, he served close to two years as the college’s athletic communications intern. Brendan picked up hands-on experience tabulating in-game statistics for various Penn State sports teams, including basketball, football, baseball, soccer, hockey, gymnastics and fencing, worked post-game press conferences and transcribed coach and player interviews.
Following his career dreams
After a brief stint working in sales for the Philadelphia 76ers, Brendan landed his big career break in September 2020.
“It’s definitely gotten me back on track,” he says of his current role with Comcast Business in Philadelphia.Brendan is excited to soon be celebrating his four-year job anniversary at Comcast. As a customer account manager, Brendan works alongside small- to medium-sized businesses, IT companies and Comcast’s operations team to meet the unique needs of existing and potential customers. Brendan analyzes each customer’s phone, Internet and television services and makes well-thought-out service recommendations based on their current and future needs.
