The Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation plans to partner with Hatboro-Horsham School District to offer a continuing education scholarship.
The scholarship will be given in honor of Frances Council Redd, Tina Coombs’ mother.
Tina began the Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation in 2011 with her husband, Eric, and their daughter, Erin. The mission of the nonprofit organization is to provide merit scholarships to future leaders who exhibit exceptional promise in academics, sports and community service.
With more than 100 scholarships given to date, Mrs. Coombs said the nonprofit organization is looking to widen its reach even further into the community. Her mother, a single parent of six children, was the perfect inspiration. Frances herself went back to college to pursue a career in special education and made sure all six of her children received a college education as well.
“Education is the cornerstone,” Mrs. Coombs said. “Once you get it, you can’t take it away.”
The idea behind the scholarship is to support a school district employee who’s pursuing a degree in special education. In announcing the partnership, Mr. Coombs called it a “life-changing scholarship.”
Hatboro-Horsham School District Superintendent Curtis Griffin said scholarship award details are still being worked out. The district hopes to finalize it by fall and begin awarding the scholarship in the spring.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to partner with the Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation,” Griffin said. “My goal has always been how can we create opportunities for all of our children?”
