The fourth annual Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation Golf Outing is a hole-in-one in terms of fundraising efforts benefitting educational opportunities for young people.
In addition to a golf tournament at the prestigious Commonwealth National Golf Club, the evening caps with a scholarship awards dinner for Hatboro-Horsham High School students, as well as students from Strath Haven High School.
Organizer Forrestine Coombs said six scholarships were given to graduates from her son Edward’s alma mater, Hatboro-Horsham High School, while three were awarded to Strath Haven High School grads.
Mrs. Coombs said the Foundation’s scholarship committee received 22 applications from Hatboro-Horsham students.
The Foundation was created in honor of Edward Taylor Coombs, a passenger who died in a tragic car crash in August 2011 at age 19. He was a rising sophomore at Marist College at the time of his death. The men’s lacrosse team continues to honor Edward for his athletic achievements and inspiration in the team’s success.
The ETC Foundation has raised more than $80,000 to provide more than 50 scholarships since its inception in 2011 and has also sent students on leadership conferences and engaged with high school students about responsible decision-making.
Contributions to various organizations including Marist College, the United Negro College Fund, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Boston University Research Center for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, as well as adopt a family programs for the holidays have also been part of recent givebacks, she said.
“We’re getting such wonderful support,” Mrs. Coombs said. “We’re trying to reach back and give back.”
